Quebec Makes Face Masks Mandatory in Public Spaces

The Legault government will be making face masks mandatory in all public spaces for everyone over the age of 12 as of July 18th.

This change will be applied before Quebec’s construction holiday as citizens go on summer vacation within Quebec. It also follows the recommendations of doctors after studies show that wearing a mask is the most effective way of preventing coronavirus from spreading. But wearing a face mask is most effective when worn by at least 80% of the population. If fewer than 80% of a population wears a mask, its effectiveness is greatly reduced.

How Are Masks Effective Against the Coronavirus Disease?

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease and is transmitted through microscopic water droplets exhaled by people infected with the virus. Not everyone who is infected shows symptoms. 80% of infections are mild or entirely without symptoms according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission is a major factor in how the COVID-19 virus spreads. By wearing a face mask, you prevent yourself from accidentally spreading COVID-19.
