1 in 4 People will Experience Mental Health Issues | Maria F. Guzzo Shares Her Story
Globally, 1 in 4 people will experience mental health issues and research shows that most will begin in adolescence. My philanthropy can not be disassociated from my Master of Science in Psychiatry and currently, my candidacy as a PhD in Mental Health at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine & Health Science.
My passion for research in this field is part of my fight against mental illness for two reasons. The first being my fundraising initiatives to help remove associations of shame or disgrace from those suffering with mental health issues. The second relies on research as science improves our understanding of the causes and risk factors for mental health problems.
Science also supports promotion and prevention interventions to help us stay healthy and aims to provide evidence on how these innovative approaches can be put into practice. My area of research focuses on the promotion and prevention of mental health, through school-based interventions for the adolescent population in both school and youth protection facilities. Through the evaluation and implementation of evidence-based interventions, my goal is to find effective ways to put science into practice, and to improve the mental health of children and teens. - Maria F. A covered mouth alludes to being silenced. This is a mask that encourages speaking up. We need to destigmatize mental health, an issue that touches upon each of us. It does not discriminate by race, age, gender or any other demographic trait. No one is immune. Many suffer in silence.
